were these things that the guy that showed me how to solder like 7 years ago gave me a few of. They were all metal, and basically you put the wires in both ends, then crimped down, then there was a hole in the center that you put the solder in. Seemed like an awesome way to hold it all together, but I've never been able to find those couplers at any local store. As far as heat shrink...yes that is a must. Thanks.
